PANELS AND TUTORIALS
Panels
1. Indigenous Ways of Knowing
“Indigenous Ways of Knowing” encapsulates the rich diversity and complexity of how Indigenous communities learn and teach. It challenges the oversimplification of Indigenous experiences by highlighting the multifaceted knowledge across different Indigenous groups. This term emphasizes that learning isn’t limited to human interactions, but extends to the entire natural world, including plants, animals, and objects often considered lifeless. These ways of knowing are intricate and location-specific, varying among communities. However, they consistently revolve around a profound reverence for the land and the imperative of maintaining a mutually beneficial connection with it.
Panelists: John Desjarlais, Dr. Dennis Michaelson, Dr. Edward Doolittle
Moderator: Leanna M. Bellegarde
2. Socio-Economical Impact Due to Initiatives Towards Green Engineering
Engineering products and services wield significant environmental, social, and economic influence. Understanding their impacts and making design choices that optimize positive outcomes across these spheres is crucial. Engineers play a pivotal role in bolstering sustainability’s three pillars: environment, society, and economy. However, a focus on environmental and economic factors often sidelines social sustainability due to limited comprehension and resources. Amidst the global shift in manufacturing and energy usage, numerous engineering projects are emerging. This presents an opportunity for Canada and other participants to integrate green engineering principles, ensuring balanced and sustainable advancement across all three pillars.
Panelists: Dr. Robert Crawhall, Dr. Maike Luiken, Dr. Richard Boudreault, Dr. Siddharth Pandey
Moderator: Dr. Samantha Sriyananda
Tutorials
1. Time-Series Forecasting with Meta-Learning: Basics and Applications
Time series issues, like forecasting and detection, are prevalent in various fields, impacting industrial system functionality. Accurate handling of these problems is vital; for instance, precise electric load prediction ensures power grid efficiency. Approaches encompass statistical and machine learning methods. Machine learning models, e.g., support vector regression, LSTM, and transformers, excel here. Limited data and evolving distributions challenge these models. Meta learning, or learning to learn, accelerates the process, proving effective in few-shot scenarios. The tutorial’s objectives are to introduce meta learning basics, recent advancements, classic time series problems, industrial applications, real-world case studies, and potential research directions.
Presenters: Dr. Di Wu, Dr. Arnaud Zinflou, Dr. Benoit Boulet
2. Deep Learning for Computer Vision – A Cloud-based GPU Deployment and Testing
Businesses globally harness artificial intelligence (AI) to tackle challenges. Healthcare achieves precise diagnoses, retail offers personalized shopping, and automakers enhance vehicle safety and efficiency. Deep learning, using layered neural networks, excels in object detection, speech recognition, and language translation. This tutorial empowers participants with hands-on computer vision exercises, employing popular deep learning tools on cloud-based GPU workstations. It trains models from scratch, imparts techniques for accuracy, and teaches utilization of pre-trained models for efficiency. A collaboration between NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute and the University of Regina, this tutorial equips attendees to independently create new deep learning applications.
Presenter: Dr. Abdul Bais
3. Generative AI (GenAI) and its impact on Post-Secondary Education
ChatGPT and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has taken the world by storm and revolutionized various fields, including computer vision, natural language processing, and creative arts. This tutorial aims to provide participants with a brief understanding of generative AI techniques, their applications, and how it would affect post-secondary education. Whether you are a student, researcher, educator, or professional seeking to explore the fascinating realm of AI creativity, this tutorial will equip you with the knowledge and skills to embark on your generative AI journey.
Presenter: Dr. Kin-Choong Yow
TOURS
On Wednesday, September 27th, we will be offering both full day tours and shorter local tours.
Full Day Tours
Canadian Light Source Tour, Saskatoon, SK
Join us for an afternoon in the beautiful city of Saskatoon for an afternoon tour at the Canadian Light Source! The Canadian Light Source is the only synchrotron in Canada and one of the largest scientific infrastructure investments in our country’s history. The Canadian Light Source (CLS) is one of the largest science projects in Canada’s history. The facility speeds up electrons to produce intensely bright synchrotron light that allows scientists to study materials at a molecular level. Over 1,000 researchers from around the world use the CLS every year. On your tour, you’ll learn about the history, how the machine works, and examples of how researchers have used the facility to conduct groundbreaking research in the fields of health, agriculture, the environment, and advanced materials.
This tour costs are $65.00 per participant, and has a maximum registration of 40 participants. Tour costs includes lunch and bus transportation from the Delta Hotel to Saskatoon and back. These tours include a box lunch – if you are taking this tour and have special dietary needs, please make a note of it during registration.
SaskPower Boundary Dam Power Station Tour, Estevan, SK
Take this unique opportunity to explore SaskPower’s Boundary Dam Carbon Capture facility in Estevan, SK. In the fall of 2014, the Boundary Dam Power Station became the first power station in the world to successfully use Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology. By capturing and safely storing CO2 emissions before they reach the atmosphere, SaskPower can help ensure a brighter future for both our province and the world. For a more in depth preview to the Boundary Dam Power Station and CCS Facility, see the link following link: https://ccsknowledge.com/.
This tour costs are $65.00 per participant, and has a maximum registration of 40 participants. Tour costs includes lunch and bus transportation from the Delta Hotel to Estevan and back. Part-Day Local Tours
The part-day local tours will occur in the city and will not have any additional cost. There will be two sessions, one running in the morning and one in the afternoon.
SaskTel’s Telco Cloud Journey and the enablement of 5G
The Telco industry has evolved from the use of custom built hardware appliances to the deployment of cloud native applications on general purpose compute clusters. This evolution has had a significant impact on Telco network architectures and how SaskTel designs, deploys, and operates Telco Networks and Services. This lab tour will demonstrate SaskTel’s journey in establishing Telco Cloud and how it is leveraged to deploy 5G. We will also demonstrate SaskTel’s use of Augmented Reality to visualize complex network deployments on Telco Cloud infrastructure. We hope you can attend to learn about Telco Cloud and why 5G is moving to a cloud based architecture.
